Call your Dr immediately and then call the supplier...Your mother is being prescribed PD by a PCP instead of a Kidney DR? Where do you live?

This is an issue we faced when we wanted to refer a hemodialysis patient to hospice. When hospice takes over, they are agreeing to pay for everything for the patient. They feel dialysis (hemo or PD) is a life saving measure not a comfort measure and therefore is opposite of what Hospice is there to provide. Hospice promotes comfort and assistance in the dying process. We did get Hospice and medicare to agree to one hemodialysis treatment per week just to remove fluid so the patient was more comfortable.

One of our patients has been on hospice for a year and is getting 3 hemodialysis treatments per week. It sounds contrary to hospice, but I would want to live as long as I possibly can as long as I being kept comfortable. Apparently insurance has allowed the above. The only thing that insurance would not cover after this patient went on hospice was his IDPN, which is a nutritional supplement.
