Daisy,
We each have our own opinion and the right to do so, however I still feel the obligation to take a proactive role in the situation of anyone driving who is not capable. I do not decide the capabilities, that is a law enforcement issue. However, I do have an obligation to report the problem. I did not mean any offense and didn't intend to imply that a dialysis patient and a drunk are equal. However, after many years as an emergency nurse I can tell you the sorrow and pain that follows auto accidents is not decreased by telling the family what the impairment of the driver was: dialysis patient, under the influence, new driver, diabetic....the person is still dead. If the dialysis patient is a safe driver on non dialysis days, then maybe that could be a compromise. Our patient who is currently in this situation has refused all alternatives and has now been stopped by the police twice in the last two weeks. Once coming for treatment and once leaving and was noted to run two cars off the road. I have more of an obligation to this patient and others than to just leave the issue. |
