PLEASE, I need an answer to this. I currently have 1/3 of my population on catheters. I do not want to allow techs to work with them and would like to have my licenced hours increased. Can you find any legal reason? The Nurse Practice act is unclear
Thanks
Cathy

There is no specific language in the Nurse Practice Act prohibiting this. It is more a matter of policy where you work. Remember that the tech cannot assess the site but can do the mechanical hookup. Troubleshooting catheter function and site assessment must be left up to the RN. Either way, ultimately the RN is responsible for patient outcomes. Push for more licensed help, there is simply not enough in dialysis units.

Rochester General(NY) was recently cited for allowing techs to access caths.
