Medicare covers physical therapy when prescribed by a physician for a covered condition and limited chiropractic services. Medicare does not cover acupuncture and I don't think it covers therapeutic massage. The medical community is becoming more aware of the need for appropriate pain management and has even started assessing pain like any other vital sign (breathing, pulse, blood pressure) on inpatients and outpatients.
There are many ways to manage pain, including therapeutic massage, biofeedback, visualization, medications. However, these treatments address symptoms but not the cause. Be sure to inform the doctor, nurse, or other member of the healthcare team that you or your loved one is in pain so they can evaluate potential causes and suggest all possible treatments.
