I have to have surgery in a city miles away. I have full govt. insurance. Does it pay for any of the expenses of travel to get there and back, or for a family member to accompany me when I'm hospitalized? Does it pay for a home nurse once I return home?

If your government insurance is Medicare, it does not pay for travel (except ambulance) or living expenses for your family for your surgery. Medicare will pay for home health services (limited nursing care, home health aide, or physical rehab) if prescribed by a physician and provided by a Medicare approved home health agency for a Medicare covered service.

If your government insurance is through the VA, talk with the benefits counselor at the VA Medical Center or the Veterans Commission office. You can find phone numbers on the Medicare website under "Helpful Contacts."

If your government insurance is because you're a federal employee, contact human resources about your insurance plan.
