My mother is new to dialysis. We are having trouble understanding fluid intake. Could you please help. She is allowed 1200cc of fluid in a 24hr period. She had a treatment on sat. and then again on tues. When they weighed her on Tuesday she had only gained 1 pound. Is that good. Thanks sue23

Sue, gaining only 1 pound from sat to tues it a bit low. 1200cc/day may be too restrictive. The best way to determine adequate fluid intake is to monitor fluid intake for a few days and see how much weight you gain. Weight gain of about two pounds per day is reasonable. The amount it takes to achieve that is the amount you can probably drink without problem. Some of your health care team can help you with this. Sometimes everyone is given a set fluid allowance, when it really should be individualized. Hope this helps.

My brother is only given 500cc per day of water in prison and he is very upset about this, is this normal for kidney patients. They are having a water shortage so he does not get any more than that. Can anything be done about this.

Sue, a good rule of thumb is to keep your weight gains to 3 kgs or less. All fluid restrictions should be individualized as some patients are very fluid sensitive and have problems with as little as a 2kg weight gain. Talk to your unit's Registered Dietitian as she should be able to help you alot. Every unit has one - ask the nurse in charge of your mother's dialysis.
