Hi, my father just got released from the hospital and is going on dialysis.

I was wondering if you could provide me with some information on what to eat for a restricted potassium diet. That's what they said he needs to do.

Any other diet information would be very helpful.

Thank you, Matt Gilmore

When your father starts dialysis, there should be a dietition on duty there that can help you. When My husband first started dialysis, we were given a list of do's and don'ts. The dietition at the dialysis clinic also gave me three cookbooks to help me understand what type of foods were ok and what to stay away from. The main thing to remember right now is to stay away from sodium (salt). Every patient is different in the degree of potassium and protein they can consume. When he has each dialysis treatment, there will be a blood test to determine what his blood contains. They will tell you if you to what degree to watch the potassuim, protein and liquid intake. I am fairly new to this also, but would be glad to share any information I have with you. If you have any other questions, please feel free to ask. I can post a list of item that contain high levels of protein to stay away from, plus a list of items that are ok in moderation. good luck to you and your father.
