What is the normal fluid you can drink on dialysis. My brother is in prison and can only have 500cc a day and he is very uncomfortable, especially in the summer durning hot weather. He is very depressed about this and it is damaging him more while on dialysis.

500 cc sounds low to me. We base a patient's fluid restriction on amount of urine output, type of dialysis and frequency of dialysis. I'd be glad to help you if you can give me this information. Also, the dialysis facility where your brother dialyzes is required to have a Registered Dietitian available. I would encourage you to call her and explain your concerns. She could then talk to the doctor and get the fluid restriction changed to a more realistic level. There could also be some other factors involved about which you may not be aware. Always ask questions. Hopefully, the facility RD will be able to help you.

Anne, I agree with your response. Most dialysis patients are on a general fluid restriction of 1,000 cc a day, but this can vary depending on the persons urine output. Please have your brother talk to the dietitian at his unit!
