Most often when a hemodialysis patient complains of itching it is related to an elevated phosphorus. One solution is to get the patient to take phsphate binders and control their intake of foods containig high levels of phosphorus.
Another solution is to use a dialyzer that has good phosphorus clearances. Phosphorus clearance is driven by the surface area of a dialyzer. It is not specific to any membrane type. Use the largest surface area the patient can tolerate to maximize the phosphorus clearance.

Another cause of itching in hemodialysis patients is related to the level of uremia. Adequate levels of therapy are the best solution there too. Again, a large surface area is the best solution.

I am a dialysis patient who had a problem with itching.

My phosphorus was a little high and I did what the dietician and my doctor recommended and it came down pretty well.

Unfortunately I continued to have itching, but now only when I was on dialysis.

My doctor switched me from a dialyzer sterilized with ETO to one sterilized with Gamma. The surface area of the dialyzer increased too, but just a little, from 1.8 to 1.9.

The itching stopped.

In my opinion it was the ETO that made me itch. When I switched to a Gamma sterilized dialyzer I was fine !
