I was just wondering if any of you have heard of people getting off dialysis once they've been on for eight months. Have you ever seen this happens with patients with lupus? What are the chances for someone to get off dialysis once they start?

In 18 years of dialysis I have seen a handful of patients "recover" enough kidney function to not need dialysis. Those patients had "residual" function and being on dialysis allowed their kidneys to heal enough to not be on dialysis.

These patients tended to be extremely compliant and followed their diet and medication regimen to the letter. One of the patients that escaped dialysis is my wifes Grandfather. He is militaristic about what he eats and taking his medication. I believe that this has prevented him from ending up back on dialysis.

Most of these patients ended up back on Dialysis several years later; several have not and one got a transplant before needing to come back.

Discuss this potential with your Doctor and Nursing staff. The most common way to get off dialysis is to have a transplant.

Keep your hopes and dreams alive; you may be one of the few. If not, see about getting a transplant. If that is not possible, learn as much as you can about dialysis and follow the Dr.s and dieticians instructions.

Merry Xmas or Happy holidays
