ALL WE HEAR IN THE NEWS AND HAVE HEARD FOR THE PAST 10-15 YEARS IS HOW TEACHERS ARE UNDERPAID, UNAPPRECIATED, DISRESPECTED AND WORK IN A MORE AGGRESSIVE ATMOSPHERE. TEACHERDS HAVE UNITED AND THEIR PLIGHT STAYS IN FRONT OF THE PUBLIC. ALL WE HEAR ABOUT NURSES IS THAT THERE IS A SHORTAGE AND IT IS ONLY GOING TO GET WORSE ONCE THE "BABY BOOMERS" RETIRE.
AS A TEACHER, YOUR YEARS OF EXPERIENCE STAYS WITH YOU (even if you switch to teaching another subject-unlike nurses who switch a specialty). WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU SAW A PAY SCALE THAT PAID YOU BASED ON....EDUCATION (degree or not), OR TOTAL YEARS OF EXPERIENCE??? WHEN DID YOU GET ALL OF THE WEEKENDS, HOLIDAYS, AND SUMMERS OFF???
I LOOKED AT TEACHER PAY IN MY CITY, BASED ON THE SAME NUMBER OF YEARS OF EXPERIENCE I HAVE THE TEACHER WORKS 1496 hrs/yr and PAID 65,000. I WORKED 2080 hrs/yr PAID 62.400 THIS IS EQUIVALENT TO AN HOURLY RATE: TEACHER $43.45/HR NURSE $30.00/HR..ABOUT 30% less than a teacher.!!!! AND THEIR HEALTH AND DENTAL INSURANCE IS PAID. I HAVE A BSN AND 35 1/2 YEARS OF EXPERIENCE. BY THE TIME THE TEACHER RETIRES..THEY WILL HAVE A RETIREMENT FINCOME....YOU WON'T UNLESS YOU HAVE A 401K.
WHY THE DISPARITY...WHAT IS OUR WORTH....... HOW DOES THIS HELP RECRUIT NURSES... DO YOU FEEL LIKE YOU HAVE BEEN KICKED TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD??????
WHAT ARE WE GOING TO DO ABOUT THIS DISPARITY AND HOW ARE WE GOING TO GET THE FACTS IN FRONT OF THE PUBLIC/POWERS THAT BE??
