Been doing this19+ yrs. My unit just refused to accept a new pt. because they had a trach (no other medical reason). Had usual conditions, HTN, DM, etc. Anyone heard of this in your unit and if so why?

Yes I have worked several units and most dont want the liability of a trach. Most units dont accept. I have had pts that do self suction, etc and it was still a no go. Not unusual.

I do not allow trachs in my clinic either. You have to consider your RN experience level and you also have to have the proper suction equipment available, which most free standing clinics do not have.
Infection control can also be an issue to consider.
