As an on-call float staff, I have been very disappointed in the infection control practices in several FMC units. I am sure this stands true for others as well. Staff, new to dialysis, are trained by an area educator (inservice/orientation/training) then let loose in the designated unit. The RN's in the designated units have 40 patients and can not be observing their staff constantly due to work loads. Techs will not address problems they observe other techs doing. I have watched one staff, for months now, continually put gloves in his pockets for use wtih patient care. In this pocket goes his pen, hands after touching various environmental surfaces, then the gloves touching access sites. I have observed staff wiping their mouths, nose, sweat from eyebrow, moving their protective face shields with sweat and then donning gloves without washing hands. This seems to continue without any intervention from staff (RN). Response "It is hard to get staff and we have to take what we can get". I have also observed patients being fearful to report this to nurse as when reported before the particular tech was rude/nasty and glared at patient frequently as well as talking about patient being a problem. This type of behavior from staff places fear in patients to speak up. What has come of our delivery of patient care?
