What's better - reuse or single use?

Jenny,
Here are a few references. The best information is not available on the web. I recommend the two booklets for patients available from the National Kidney Foundation. In the U.S. call toll free 1-800-622-9010 and single copies can be mailed to you. 1. What You Should Know About Dialyzer Reuse: A Guide for Hemodialysis Patients 2. Getting the Most From Your Treatment: What You Need to Know About Hemodialysis. Web site information: Effects of hemodialyzer reuse on clearances of urea and beta2-microglobulin. The Hemodialysis (HEMO) Study Group abstract by Cheung AK, Agodoa LY, Daugirdas JT, Depner TA, Gotch FA, Greene T, Levin NW, Leypoldt JK from J Am Soc Nephrol 1999 Jan;10(1):117-27 National Kidney Foundation report on dialyzer reuse. abstract from Am J Kidney Dis 1988 Jan;11(1):1-6 AAKP Advisory on Hemodialysis - 1999 Talk with your nephrologist about your dialysis prescription including reuse of the dialyzer. The dialyzer type is a physician prescription. Reuse consent must be given by the patient (or responsible family member) and remains a decision between each patient and their nephrologist. Best wishes, Deborah |
