Spent a year or so working in Florida and made few trips down to Key West. If you just need a place to crash and clean up then check out the older motels. There was a place right on Duval just off of Truman called the Key Lodge.
Last time I was there it was Fantasy Fest and Halloween - it was a definite life altering experience.

Went there in 2006 for my honeymoon. Unbelieveable place, great food and good people.
Flew into Miami, rented a car, and drove down (the only way to do it honestly). So scenic passing over the bridges.
I can't exactly remember where we stayed, but our room faced the ocean, right where the cruiseliners docked. (I forget what the main gathering place was called at night), but it was the hotel right next to it.

Sloppy Joes is probably one of the better bars in Key West, spent many an hour there. I also remember the feral cats and chickens everywhere, something about the cats being the descendants of Hemingway's cats and they all have 6 toes.
Been there and never want to go back. Key West is A$$ backwards. They have wild chickens running around, 6 toed cats running around, and not to mention the main reason I want go back, is all the gay folks there. When men are looking better than some women there, you need to stay away!!!
