Hello all!
My Aunt is currently undergoing home dialysis treatment administered by my Uncle.
Given the recent power outages he has asked me to spec. a emergency generator for him.
I am a Master Electrician.
He is using a Fresenius model 2008H with an R.O. system.
I have no problem meeting the power requirements for these units, but there may be other issues I am overlooking.
For instance: I have not decided weather to include UPS backup to bridge the 10 seconds or so that the generator will take to provide power.
What happens to the unit(s) in the event that power is lost and then restored during treatment?????
Additionaly, their insurance company requires that the units be run from hospital grade receptacle, which will be no problem if I run a whole house generator.
If I do need a UPS though, I will need to replace the receptacles on the back, or spec a hospital grade model.
(I have NEVER heard of one of these)
Lets not forget the couple of thousand dollars added for UPS as well!!!
Any thoughts or observations would be most welcome!!!
I will be checking this board regularly.
Thank you!

Mark, As I understand the question you want to know about the 10 second delay? The units I have been associated with have generators and do experience the 10 second delay before the power kicks in. This does not present a problem.

Thanks for the word, Honey.
I had supposed the machine would have some sort of capacity to handle a problem like this.
I was mostly worried about the R.O. system, as it operates at a pretty high pressure (at least the BIG ones I have worked with!) and did not know if there would be any problem from that side.
I certainly want to do right by aunt!!
Anyone else with a comment, it would be appreciated!!!
Anyone out there actually use a generator set up??
Thank's
---Mark

Mark,

I wouldn't worry about a UPS mainly because of the size and cost of something as big as what you would need.

When you size the generator, keep in mind that the Fresenius machine needs a bare minumum of 12 amps plus however much the RO machine needs as well as lighting ect. Also, since the machine is essentially a computer, you would need a high quality (buffered) generator so that you dont get dips and surges in power.

Yes, I actually used a generator running on a Fresenius 2008H machine. Just a short time ago when the electric went off in NYS and Ohio etc. we were hit. We turned on the generator (the delay isn't a problem) and initiated the treatment. The power did return during the treatment but we stayed on the generator until the treatment was finished because we didn't know if the power was going to be stable. It came on and went back off about 3 times. We do not have the UPS backup bridge you are referring too.

We have used a Generator Set Up with a Fresenius 2008H machine. In fact just a couple weeks ago.
The power outage that hit NY, Ohio etc. hit us.
We turned on the generator and did the treatment. The power came back on but we stayed on the generator until the treatment was complete as the power was coming on and going off. We do not have the UPS backup. If you have anything technically you want an answer to post it. I don't know much about this as my significant other actually put in the generator to run the machine and RO. I will ask him and give you his answers.

The machine will go off if you have a delay from line voltage to backup power of even part of a second. You'll have to turn the machine back on.
