mjpc,

At a minimum you will use 4 pair, 1 for put-on, 1 for take-off, 2 for dressing change. More than that will depend on if/how many interactions you have during the treatment that would require gloves.

The CDC recommendations say you need to wear gloves whenever you touch the machine. So glove usage should be high whether it is catheter and internal access patient. Gloves must be changed and hands cleansed between each patient. So if you are touching the machine during the treatment (saline flushes, resetting alarms etc.) you would be using many pair of gloves per patient.

tracy,

I have never seen this reccomendation and it sounds like severe over-kill to me. Can you provide us with a link to it?

A revisit:

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Recommendations for Preventing Transmission of Infections Among Chronic Hemodialysis Patients: MMWR 2001. 50(No RR-5); (p.17)

Infection Control Precautions for All Patients:

"Wear disposable gloves when caring for the patient or touching the patient's equipment at the dialysis station; remove gloves and wash hands between each patient or station."

Sterile gloves should be used for the catheter procedures, however nonsterile should be used for all other functions.
