I posted previously some of my sisters lab readings, as we attempt to try to figure out what is going on. In addition to very high aluminum, she had a hi bicarbonate reading last time.

I figure numbers "out of wack" must mean something, so I've done some reading and wanted anyone's thoughts on this.

Jill's bicarb - 38
Ranges given 22-29

According to what I've read
(1) Hi Bicarb dialysate effects acidosis and nutrional status

(2) Alkalosis causes hypokalemia, and decreases serum concentration of ionized calcium by increasing calcium ion binding to albumin

(3) The "degree of alkalosis might be severe if they have vomiting"

I do think we are dealing with a number of issues, not a single one, which of course is part of the problem right now - her physician only has time for quick easy "fixes".....

So, looking foreward to hearing from anyone who has experienced this or has more knowledge,

Thank you

Wendy,

In reference to bicarb levels...

Current studies are now leaning towards higher bicarb levels contributing to improving a patients well being with many units aiming for a level of between 38-40. I posted a reference to a paper a few months ago on this subject for Carol though I do not recall the name of it and am not able to locate it again. Maybe Carol can recall it?
