The Nephrologist called the other evening and told me that he was reducing my Mom's Dialysis time from 4 hours to 3 hours...also next month he's going to reduce the day from 3 time a week to 2 times a week.

Is this a good sign???

Hi:

Usually, reducing dialysis is not a good thing.
It's generally believed that the more the better.
I would ask her doctor why these changes are being made. Perhaps she's doing so well -- and has good residual use of her kidneys -- that he feels this is enough.
But I'd certainly want details, especially if this is just a budget-cutting measure.

Best,
Mike

Hi:

A kidney function rate of 74% sounds very good.

Each patient's situation is different, but renal failure or ESRD tends to set in when kidneys are functioning at 10 to 15 per cent, or lower.

I'd double-check that figure with you're Mom's doctor.

How is she feeling generally? Is she being kept on a strict diet? I'd be most interested to hear what you discover.

Mike

Maybe it was her URR that was 74%...she is not on a restricted diet. She eats what she wants and her lab reports are super every month!!!She hasn't High Blood Pressure or Diabetes either. She is basically pretty healthy for someone 81 years old.
