Has anyone had experience with dialysis in prison setting. How do you get proper care and stay alive while there on dialysis. Only in for a couple of years.

Hi Ann:
I can only speak for Canada, but any prisoner must be provided adequate health coverage, including dialysis. They also get dental care as required and free medications. Some highly conservative voters begrudge this, but it's the law.
Hope you get some answers from U.S. residents in similar situations and that the situation is similar.
Best, Mike

In my transplant clinic I did see an person wearing a prisoner outfit. We was escorted by a peace officer of some sort.
I live in the bay area I think San Quentin is close to here.
I am a RN working in a dialysis unit in a prison in Missouri. We have 20 patients, and I feel that they all receive excellent care. However, just like I tell ANY patient--you must be assertive in your care. Get involved, try to learn as much as you can about your disease and just any aspect in general with your care. Our unit is run by a Nurse Manager. We have one nephrologist who is in charge of all of our patients while they are on dialysis. The physician "makes rounds" once a month. If we have concerns or the patient needs something, we can page him at any time. Otherwise, the clinic is run just like the clinics on the street. If you have any more specific questions--feel free to post and I can see if I can help you. But feel confident--I am sure you will receive excellent care!
