Howdy Everyone

"Satelite Dialysis" is running some tests on Dual Dialyzer Dialysis. They are attempting to determine if using two dialyzers will shorten time or at least improve dialysis quality.

I know of two units in San Jose, Californina that are participating in the study.

I talked with the staff about this and I am next in line. I will start in November. Here is what they told me. The study has two requirements over 4 hrs of dialysis and you must weigh over 100 kg. They run you for a few weeks with the dialyzers in series then in parrallel. finally you get a couple weeks back on single dialyzer. Then they figure out what is best for you.

I will report more when/if I can. My transplant may come before then.

Thanks
Jim

Hi Jim:

Very interesting. What blood flow rate would they be able to achive, assuming they are using the same access?

And why only for people over 100 kg?

Would be interested in hearing more about tests. Meanwhile, all the best on expected transplant.

Sincerely,
Mike

An interesting little tid bit. I was taking to one of the guys on the dual dialyzer treatment and he was saying he was having problems with blood coagulation too quickly. The Dialyzers were set up in series. By the time it had reached the second dialyzer it was clotting. The staff has to give him a steady stream of porcine to keep it going. They are thinking the parrellel set up will be better.

I don't know about blood flow, I will have to check.

Thanks
