My friend is deaf in one ear and has been having a problem with the other ear after Dialysis lately. He did have to go to the ER one night a few weeks ago. They said he had an ear infection. They put him on meds, it cleared up. Now he is having trouble with it again He could barely hear because of the ringing in his good ear yesterday after Dialysis. As I was waiting for him to come out, another man had just come out from his session complaining of the same thing. Can anyone help me with this one. Has anyone else been having a problem like that? Thank you.

That happened to me once when they took too much fluid off. I think it is a mild form of shock. It wasnt so much a ringing more like everyone sounded distant.
Maybe your friends dry weight needs to be changed.
Hope it helps jim jrickel@fusionone.com

I have had hearing problems twice after dehydration episodes. Once after a hemodialysis error where I ended up 2 kilos light and once after severe diarrhea.

Jim,Thank you so much for your reply. I had just about given up hope of getting one. That sounds about right. I think that was what they told him. If that is so, they do need to readjust his dry weight. He was over on his fluids Wednesday of last week. They made him go back Thursday, then again Friday. Friday he had the ear problem again. Yes, it is that he can't hear well and we have to keep repeating. That is very scary to him as he was born deaf in the other ear. I will pass this on to him this evening. Thanks again so much for your reply. Sue

I too have similar problems with my hearing after dialysis and have had hearing issues, including the loss of hearing in one ear, for all of my life.
My experience on dialysis is that during the last hour or so of my treatment, my hearing begins to fade and static/ringing/distance increases. It gets hard to understand any questions that my tech asks me at the end of my session. It clears up by the next day, sometimes by the evening, and then I hear normally again. But, since I dialate on M-W-F, I can only count on hearing every other day and on weekends!
None of my doctors have a clue as to the cause of it but it does seem to be worse when I get "too dry." Would be interested in hearing from others with similar conditions.
Does the unit use the Crit-line? As a practitioner, I have found that the Crit-line device can prevent dehydration during dialysis if used properly. Part of the problem, often times is that dialysis staff get locked into a certain dry weight or blood pressure and do not assess the entire patient. This sounds like a problem that should not be a side effect of dialysis as it would greatly affect the quality of life for the patient.

I was having that problem with my ears, then one day I went home and cleaned them out, and the reason I couldn't hear was that I had extremely thick wax built up in my ear canal that had formed a plug! This started the first year I was on hemo, and I have now been on for 6 years. A visit to an ear-nose-and-throat doctor showed that I had very heavy post-nasal drip that was accumulating in my eustachian tubes and producing my own 'earplugs!' For some reason, the fluid loss of the treatments aggravates this and sometimes the pressure in my ears causes headaches. But that's what caused my post-dialysis hearing loss. Other people in my unit have a similar problem.
