Will Fresenius be closing other high Medicare/Medicaid units? And where will those patients go for treatment if their current unit is considered to be too low-paying to keep open?
I'm concerned about this because the unit I go to in Massachusetts has a high number of Medicare/Medicaid patients-- and ALL of the local units are Fresenius! |

Fresenius is a publicly owned company that has the right to choose where they want to provide services. Perhaps these closings are political as well as financial. Closing DC facilities will certainly get some political mileage and show that the medicare reimbursement rates need to be higher. The alternative is to have the government provide services in these areas with a high percent of Medicare/Medicaid patients. When the government tries to operate these facilites on a shoestring budget they will realize that paying more efficient companies a little more money to provide the service will save the government more money in the long run.
If FMC pulls out of the area, there will certainly be other providers looking to fill the gap and to pick up facilites on the cheap. Maybe the other big dialysis company in MA, ARA will want to increase there share of the market with the assumption that the patient mix will become more heavy with commercial patients. Good luck and I hope they keep your facility open. |
