I read articles that state that EPO can cause hallucinations. If this is true, shouldn't 'combative' patients be evaluated to see if EPO is behind the problem?

We have several 'difficult' patients at my unit... just wondering if this could be the cause.

Hi:
I took EPO for three years and suffered no side effects. Certainly have not heard of hallucinations. But perhaps others have.

Being a sixties kind of guy, it occurred to me that having hallucinations during treatment might be more fun than scratching and watching Jerry Springer.

Articles I have read about Epo seem to say that hallucinations are not primarily a side effect of the drug itself, but of perceptual changes related to ckd and its host of related problems. Many have hypertension, diabetes, and always anemia. All of these problems cause visual disturbances. Hypoglycemia, profound anemia and bad Jerry Springer episodes are all very likely to cause "combative" behavior. Epo is probably not the suspect.
