What can I do for my mother when she comes off dialysis and is throwing up, I understand this can happen when too much fluid taken in between treatments, and this maybe the reason, because of the holiday her session was moved from Tuesday to Monday and then she was on 2.5 hrs instead of the usual 4 hours. We went back yesterday (Thursday) for the regular appointment and they pulled 6 pounds ( normally 4 pounds) off and within 30 minutes of leaving she was throwing up and shaking. If the patient is restricted to 1200 cc of fluid what do you do in these cases? She is also diabetic and has congestive heart failure, I am at my wits end with the conflicting diets, and struggling with her fluid intake. I am new to the list, but she went on dialysis in April 2001. All replies appreciated, I am ready to give up. Deborah
It "sounds" like they are taking too much fluid off your mom, and dropping her blood pressure. Try to establish a known "dry weight", don't forget weight changes in clothes, shoes, sweaters that can be asssumed are fluid if staff is in a hurry. How much does she weigh, how tall, have you told your Doc and nurse?
Mitch, It's a she; you really should learn to read!
I have the same problem because I've been gaining weight since starting dialysis, plus I still urinate, however I'm starting to take on a little fluid. It's very difficult trying to figure what portion of a gain is real weight, and what portion is fluid gain. The new device that is mentioned I believe in the business news on this site, sounds like it will more accurately assess dry weights. Go to: http://xitron-tech.com
