My grandfather is 96 years of age, he will turn 97 on September 30. He has been on dialysis for about 2 years now, ever since he fell and broke his hip actually. He is in remarkly good spirits and good health and says that while it will be a long haul he hopes to reach 100.

Recently comments by nurses and doctors have been made that he is likely the oldest patient in our area (Brantford, Ontario, Canada), and possibly the oldest in Canada.

Can anyone share experiences or just statistics on elderly patients on dialysis? My grandfather is quite anxious to determine where he is in the age standings, as for him every milestone he reaches is an important one.

Thank you for your efforts.

JS, I don't really think I can help but I just had to answer your post anyway. Please tell your grandfather that I think he is really amazing, dialysis or not! I was a nurses aide prior to my life on dialysis. He has set a record for longevity by any standards! I hope he keeps going strong! Three cheers for him! I hope I do as well. Lin.

There should be a message board with standings for dialysis patients-- it would give us something to hope for.

I can't really give you any information either, I don't think anyone in our family has ever reach 96. But my hats off to your grandfather. I hope he continues to do well with dialysis and lets the world know senior citizens are wonderful.

Thank you for your kind comments! I will pass them on to my grandfather as I know he will appreciate them.

We all feel lucky indeed to have his spirit to guide his. His strength in day-to-day life, let alone in his recovering from small accidents and illnesses, is a remarkable feat. Most people do not believe he is 96, and he is an inspiration to many patients, nurses and doctors who come into contact with him. His quick wit and intelligence is sure to put a smile on the face of even hardened cynics!

Thanks again, and I look forward to reading any more comments that come through.

H:

Congratulations to your grandfather! Ive dialysed in several Canadian cities and have talked to people around the world and I have never heard of anyone near that age doing so well.

An inspiration.

Best,
Mike
