I have been on dialysis about 2 months, I have had afib with my heart and then went into hospital about 3 wks ago, now my blood presure is all out of whack way to high averages 168-220 over 95-110. Taking all kinds of meds can't get under control. When in hospital never got sick on dialysis, now though every time at center I get hot sweaty, nauseated, and bad bad headache. This is awfull, is it normal or what is going on any ideas. Please any info would be helpful!

Thanks

This could be a problem with reuse, make sure your care giver is checking to see that the dialyzer is rinsed all the way. They should also be dumping the first 200cc of saline before hooking you up. Some people will say that a reuse reaction will happen with in 5 min of the start of treatment, but there is new information out there that has said that it can be a problem with in the first hour of treatment.
It could also be that it is the type of dialyzer you are on, I have seen that people will have different problems with different typs of dialyzers due what the dialyzer is made from.
Most of all you must make sure that your Doctor knows what is going on, don't count on the RN to tell him.
Don't give up!

I have had pts experience these type of symptoms. Here are several causes that I have found to be the culprits. High blood pressure may cause the headaches. I think there are some B/P meds that can be taken before dialysis txs that wont wash off during tx. The sodium level set on the dialysis machine may be set too high. You can use UF modeling to take your wt off mostly at beginning of tx and the rest the last hrs of your tx. I have seen also that during priming of your dialyzer that using a whole 1000cc bag of saline to rinse can help. But if there is an allergy to reuse, you would instantly feel a burning sensation at the access site once you are hooked up. Since you are a fairly new to dialysis, maybe it is anxiety symptoms. I hope these ideas will help. It will get better.

Does this happen every tx? Are you on the same machine? Do you observe your fluid limits and do you know what your goal (fluid removed) should be? Do you know what the conductivity of your machine is?

It is very important that you learn how to assess yourself for dry weight and goal, or it is just a matter of time before you will have problems again.
