Mom has been on dialysis for almost 5 months. Seems that every time after a treatment, she loses most of her voice (she can speak in a whisper). There is no throat pain, however, she was diagnosed with emphazema a few years ago. Anyone have a similar problem? The renal people have never seen or heard of this before. Please let me know if anyone out there has a similar problem and if there is anything that can be done about it.

My first thought is that she is getting a little to dry. I have seen this in a couple of patients.
The other is a type of mild allergic reaction.

Does this mean that it'll eventually go away? She is also so very depressed over all of this and wants to stop dialysis. I think she is getting more than a "little dry", as her voice literally disappears after each treatment. No one else at dialysis has had this experience. I now am beginning to wonder if it's psychosomatic?

I have had this happen to me on a number of occassions. In my case it was because of being taken too dry. Another symptom that goes along with this is ears popping. I learned to set my own goal (the amount of fluid that is taken off) and this doesn't happen anymore. This can easily happen to an elderly patient or any patient who is not involved in his own tx. If a patient's txs are hurtful because of wrong settings like this, he can easily give up or be hurt so badly that he could die. If your mother can not become educated on her tx, the only other choices are that you get her in a unit where they take proper care of her, or a relative must sit with her at txs and make sure all is done correctly.
