I don't know much about PD but I do know a little about hottubs. Bacteria can grow quite rapidly in them. I personally don't think I would chance it unless you know the chemical balance is being maintained at all times.
I do know that a slow nocturnal patients who started in the same program we are in, discontinued because she had a hot tub and was getting way to many infections. However, I am very ignorant medically and maybe the 2 catheters have such differences it wouldn't bother the PD cath as much. |

Hi Mick:
While I was on HD, rather than PD, I did so mainly with a chest catheter. My doctor allowed short swims in "safe" pools with proper covering, he did not allow hot tubs or saunas. Too much chance of germs and other nasties muntiplying. Had no problems over the years. Best, Mike |

Hi
I,too,do my best to lead a "normal life"in this crazy situation. Swimming and Hot Tubs are possible. I use an Active Life One Piece Closed-End Pouch (otherwise known as an ostomy bag) to cover my exit site and dialysis tube. The specific one I use is made by ConvaTec NDC 0003-1757-62. You should consult with a nurse to learn how to put it on most effectively. I secure mine with additional "pink tape". This system has not failed me in 6 years. Let the good times roll..... |

In addition to the ostomy bag, I would like to add that you can use something called Stomahesive to seal more tightly the area around the opening. It it like, and used like a caulk of sorts, sealing around the edges of the opening to keep water out. It is easily removed after soaking in the spa, or showering. I have used it when showering and bathing patients with all types of caths.
I wish I had a spa! |
