IN ONE SMALL CHAIN OF DIALYSIS UNITS(72 NATIONWIDE) IN ONE YEAR THERE WERE NEARLY 90 CHOKING DEATHS. IF THERE WERE 90 DEATHS CAN YOU IMAGINE HOW MANY CHOKING INCIDENTS ACTUALLY OCCURED. DIALYSIS NURSES ARE ONLY LOOKING OUT FOR YOUR SAFETY AND CERTAINLY ARE NOT BEING MEAN. WHEN YOU'VE WITNESS SOMEONE ALMOST DIE FROM CHOKING ON THE MACHINE YOU'LL THEN SEE WHY THESE POLICIES ARE INEFFECT. MOST OF US REALY LOVE OUR PATIENTS AND WANT THEM TO LIVE A LONG, LONG TIME. JUST THINK ABOUT IT???

Marian:

I live in Canada and have to say I've never heard of a choking incident, let alone death.

As a dialysis nurse, can you provide any additional details? I assume you're referring to the eating/not eating debate.

What are the policies you refer to? Are both PD and HD patients affected?

Is there another site you can refer us to for details?

Thanks,
Mike

I've been on hemo six years, and we've never had a choking incident at our unit. We have TONS of people throwing up, but nobody's choked because of it. Where can we get info on where this is occurring?
