I have been on dialysis for three years without a problem with weight gain until I had a parathyroidectomy a year ago for hyperphospatemia. Since then, no matter how hard I tried, I have gained 19kg! Any one else had a problem with this? (Thyroid studies all normal). Thanks!

Yes, I also gained 20 pounds after I had my parathyroids out, but it's hard to tell if it was the partial thyroidectomy (I had a parathyroid hiding in there!) or the fact that I was taken off of Zoloft that caused the weight gain. Whatever caused it, I've been trying for two years to lose the weight, and I'm playing the lose-a-kilo-gain-a-kilo game!

I also had a parathyroidectomy 12/01/00 and have experienced weight gain...thank you for your posting...i am not sure if this weight is 'real weight' or fluid that won't come off...i keep 'crashing' and have experienced many episodes of low blood pressure since the suregery. Have you had any problems with low blood pressure?
I had crashing problems that whole first year, but now I rarely crash. I think it was because they were going for my old dry weight and it was actually body weight, not fluid. Things aren't so bad now, but the damned unquenchable thirst continues.

I had my parathyroids out the other month and have actually started to lose weight due to me being more active again. The pain in my joints and muscles was painful and meant that i was just unable to do anything but dialyse, now I am getting back to what I used to feel like and can look forward to restarting the activities i used to do before, ie swimming
