Can independent nephrologists, setting up their own dialysis center, still make a profit? How many dialysis patients are needed to break even? What are the downsides of being independent?
Depending on the part of the country, i.e. cost of living, the breakeven in number of patients is 18 to 24. There are services available through our company as well as others that will assist independent nephrologists in opening and managing a freestanding dialysis facility cost effectively. The downside of being independent is the lack of purchasing power, understanding the nuances of dialysis reimbursement, and corporate compliance issues. Once again these issues can be addressed by outsourcing certain management responsibilities to companies with expertise in this field.

To add to Carrie's response, one key to your decision process is to prepare a detailed financial pro-forma as a way to test the financial feasibility of a facility. Our company and others offer this service. You can then run "optimistic, realistic, and pessimistic" scenarios. No business should be considered without a thorough business plan. The financial pro-forma's become the basis for this plan.

I spent 3 years "thinking about it" -- came to some conclusions I would be happy to share with you -- I now own 2 units,14 stations each in a rapidly growing area. Have learned TONS - both the up side and the down side. Will answer all questions.

My company owns 52 Nursing Facilities in Ohio and we are growing. We are expanding into other areas of Healthcare. Three of our facilities currently have Dialysis Units. We would be very interested in partnering either with a Nephrologist or a small Dialysis company that would be interested in a joint venture. My contact information is: Robert Speelman 330-204-1040 email: rspeelman@provider-services.net

MY husband wants to open a small Dialysis clinic in Morocco.Having a hard time finding business plans or even the basic equipment needed in a clinic.Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
I live in San Antonio, TX and just returned from Louisiana visiting my family. I talked to my sister while I was there about opending a dialysis business. She has been a nurse for over 15 years and have been around all kinds of patients including working in a bialysis clinic. Just wanted to know if there was anyone out there who could point me into the right direction on how to get a business plan started and any other info they could share with me.
