November 8, 2001 - The latest scientific articles and information related to ESRD nutrition:
Here is the RenalWEB Topic Page for Nutrition.

July 26, 2001 - The July 2001 issue of the Journal of Renal Nutrition (JRN) is now on-line. Among the available articles are:
"Comparison of the effects of two early intervention strategies on the health outcomes of malnourished hemodialysis patients" - abstract from JRN. The study found that it appears that use of nutritional supplements early in the course of malnutrition provides benefits.

"Patients' experiences of a dialysis diet and their implications for the role of the dietitian" - abstract from JRN.

"Clinical determinants of interdialytic weight gain" - abstract from JRN. The study found that a stable interdialytic weight gain (IDWG) may be a useful clinical marker of adequate calorie and protein intake. IDWG does not seem directly related to BP, even in hypertensive patients.

"Serial prealbumin levels as predictors of outcomes in a retrospective cohort of peritoneal and hemodialysis patients" - abstract from JRN. The study supports the clinical utility of regular prealbumin monitoring among hemodialysis patients.

June 30, 2001 - This study from the UK used a palmtop computer to collect hourly ratings of hunger, desire to eat, fullness, and tiredness by dialysis patients. They fournd that a hemodialysis session reduces hunger and desire to eat. Patients feel more tired after dialysis. This does not correlate with their hunger score, but does correlate with their fullness rating.
"A novel technique to demonstrate disturbed appetite profiles in haemodialysis patients" - abstract from Nephrology Dialysis Transplantation

June 27, 2001 - Here are two recent articles in Nephron about nutrition for dialysis patients:
"Effect of L-Carnitine Supplementation in Hemodialysis Patients" - abstract from Nephron

"Effect of Dialysis Dose on Nutritional Status of Children on Chronic Hemodialysis" - abstract from Nephron

May 31, 2001 - The latest issue of the American Journal of Kidney Diseases (AJKD) has two articles and an opinion piece on nutrition:
This paper concludes that the vast majority of dyslipidemic patients with end-stage renal failure require pharmacological therapy. Here is the abstract of the article entitled, "Effect of Lipid-Lowering Dietary Recommendations on the Nutritional Intake and Lipid Profiles of Chronic Peritoneal Dialysis and Hemodialysis Patients" - abstract from June issue of AJKD.

"Protein Intake, Control of Serum Phosphorus, and Relatively Low Levels of Parathyroid Hormone in Elderly Hemodialysis Patients" - abstract from AJKD

Opinion Piece: "DOQI Guidelines for Nutrition in Long-Term Peritoneal Dialysis Patients: A Dissenting View"

May 26, 2001 - There are several new articles on nutritional issues for dialysis patients in the scientific journals:
Assessment of nutritional status in end-stage renal disease - full text article from UpToDate (link is no longer available)

Nutritional Status over Time in Hemodialysis and Peritoneal Dialysis - abstract from the June issue of the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology (JASN)

Protein restriction and progression of renal failure - full text article from UpToDate (link is no longer available)

Adaptive Response to a Low-Protein Diet in Predialysis Chronic Renal Failure Patients - abstract from the June issue of the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology (JASN)

The impact of supplemental feeding in young children on dialysis: A report of the North American Pediatric Renal Transplant Cooperative Study - abstract from Pediatric Nephrology
