New research published in this week's New England Journal of Medicine shows that parathyroid hormone might be the best treatment for osteoporosis to date. Here is a summmary of the study from WebMD.
Dialysis patients are usually trying to lower their levels of parathyroid hormone. For end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients, hyperparathyroidism is usually associated with bone disease (calcium depletion, brittleness). Here is a listing of recent articles on hyperparathyroidism and dialysis from the MEDLINE database at the National Library of Medicine. Here is "A Patient's Guide to Understanding Secondary Hyperparathyroidism" (pdf format) from the Bone Care International web site. Here is the abstract of the article entitled, "Effect of Parathyroid Hormone (1-34) on Fractures and Bone Mineral Density in Postmenopausal Women with Osteoporosis", that appears in this week's New England Journal of Medicine. Here is a short explanation of the Pathogenesis of Renal Osteodystrophy. [This message has been edited by Gary Peterson (edited 12-16-2001).] |
