July 30, 2001 - Today's edition of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel has a story that sheds light on a new report on survival rates at organ transplant centers. According to the article, some transplant centers are getting away with sending less than half of their results to agencies that report such information to the public.

This new report was done by the University Renal Research and Education Association (URREA web site), a University of Michigan-related group that got the federal contract last year. Its information came from the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS web site), the agency that runs the nation's transplant system.

A quote from the Milwaukee JS article:
"We of course are concerned" about centers giving only partial information, said the Michigan group's president, Philip Held, "but we are not the policeman."

Some other web sites that report transplantation statistics are:
ustransplant.org web site. Here is the page for viewing transplant center-specific reports.

The Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network (OPTN) web site.
