March 13, 2002 - In this week's issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), Dr. Stuart Oserman of Park Ridge, Illinois offers an explanation as to why hemodialysis patients that dialyze in the morning have a lower mortality rate than those that dialyze in the afternoon. Letter from March 13 issue of JAMA.
December 5, 2001 - Here are more mainstream media articles on the study released yesterday that suggests that dialysis patients live longer if they dialyze in the morning, rather than the afternoon. "Kidney Patients Live Longer With Morning Dialysis, Study Shows" - article from Bloomberg Financial News December 4, 2001 - Today's issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) contains a study that suggests some end-stage renal disease patients live longer if they undergo dialysis treatments in the morning instead of the afternoon. The abstract of the study from Emory University, "Survival by Time of Day of Hemodialysis in an Elderly Cohort", is available on-line from JAMA. Some specialists are already pointing about possible flaws in the study. As an example, there were more blacks in the morning group than in the afternoon one, and blacks on dialysis are known to have better survival rates than whites. Here is a layman's explanation of the study from AP/Yahoo. (link is no longer available) [This message has been edited by Gary Peterson (edited 06-11-2002).] |
