(September 22) - At least 2700 people are still trapped in the debris of Tuesday's earthquake in Taiwan. At 7.6 on the Richter scale, it was the most intense earthquake ever recorded in Taiwan's history and was stronger than the 7.4 earthquake that struck Turkey last month.

(September 21) - Turkish Prime Minister Ecevit ordered an investigation into press reports that groups were cutting open bodies of people killed in last month's earthquake to illegally harvest their organs for transplants.

(September 3) Baxter announced that it has donated nearly $200,000 of supplies and money to the relief work in Turkey.

(August 27) Hospitals in Turkey continue to be flooded with victims of the recent earthquake. As expected, there has been a large number of patients with kidney-related problems.

(August 23) Rescuers continue to pull victims from the rubble of the earthquake in Turkey. Dialysis professionals there are facing the enormous logistical problems of caring for their chronic patients in a chaotic environment plus trying to manage the cases of earthquake-related acute renal failure caused by "crush syndrome".

Several articles are available about crush syndrome, which often results in acute renal failure in earthquake victims with prolonged limb compression, associated traumatic destruction of skeletal muscle (rhabdomyolysis), and its nephrotoxic effects. Here is a listing of articles from PubMed.
