Seven more facilities have reported transducer protector failures. See story from Yahoo.

Centers reporting problems are Bayonne Hospital in Bayonne, N.J., Total Renal Care in Miami Lakes, Flor., Dialysis Clinic of Oak Ridge, Tenn., Maine General Medical Center in Waterville, Maine, Mercy Hospital Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa, Methodist Hospital in Houston, Cape County Regional Dialysis Center in Cape Girardeau, MO., Bay Health Medical Center in Dover, Del., St. Mary's Hospital in Tucson, Ariz., Lee Regional Hospital in Johnstown, Penn., and the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Wilkes-Barre, Penn.

It is unclear whether this problem is only seen with transducer protectors that are attached to blood tubing sets or is also seen with stand-alone transducer protectors. Further investigations are being done.

All transducer protectors will fail at high enough pressures and different brands do vary, so it will be interesting to watch how this is sorted out.

At least two lawsuits have now been filed as a result of this problem.

Patients filing the law suit fear "being further ostracised by the stigma associated with HIV exposure".

See the original FDA Alert and Product Recall.

The lawsuit story is from AIDS Weekly Plus at NewsFile and is a pay-for-view story.
