August 29, 2002 - California is in its 60th day of its new fiscal year without a budget in place. A $100 billion spending plan has been approved by the Senate but is stalled in the 80-member Assembly.

Many California dialysis centers receive reimbursement under the Medi-Cal program.

After a similar budget crisis a few years ago, California legislators created a $2 billion fund to pay Medi-Cal providers in the event of a budget deadlock. The California Healthcare Association is now reporting that the $2 billion has been expended.

However, it appears that reimbursements to dialysis clinics under the Medi-Cal program will continue in spite of the protracted budget deadlock due to a federal statute requiring expeditious reimbursement. Story from the California Dialysis Council.
