December 24, 2003 - A single Holstein on a Washington state farm has tested positive for mad cow disease, marking the disease's first suspected appearance in the United States, the Bush administration announced Tuesday as it assured Americans their food is safe. June 17, 2002 - The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has released a draft guidance document on the prevention of transmission of Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (CJD - also known as "mad cow" disease).

The new FDA restrictions, outlined in a just-released 26-page draft document (pdf format), give blood centers until May 2002 to implement a ban on donations from travelers who spent a total of three months or more in the United Kingdom between 1980 and 1996, the period of time considered by most mad cow disease experts to be the height of the epidemic among cattle in that country.
