This week's issue of the British Medical Journal includes a unique new scoring system for assessing a patient's risk of death from cardiovascular disease. Its purpose is to help doctors determine a patient's need for antihypertensives and other strategies for improving cardiovascular health. The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute developed this heart disease calculator, using data from the Framingham Heart Study, a 50-year epidemiological research project on the causes of heart disease. (link is no longer available)
