I have not been on CAPD in over 15 years and was wondering if there have been any significant improvements to the procedure (I had a successful transplant). I may need to go back on dialysis in the future and want to know what to expect as well as what is the best choice for treatment.

Dear Anthony:
There have been many changes to CAPD over the past 15 years. Transfer sets are shorter. You no longer need to wear a bag between exchanges. Systems have features which help reduce infections. Assist devices are available for various problems, such as dexterity issues. There are new solutions available. There are new bag sizes. The literature often refers to all of these changes as very positive and helpful to the therapy. I am sure any PD nurse you talk to can show you the new products and procedures available for CAPD today.
Regards, Helene Olefsky
