Katrina please look at the "No response to Tim T post". The subject of SEP, Sclerosing encapsulating peritonitis is discussed. I think you will find a lot of your questions answered.

Katrina,

Read the post under "no response from Tim T". Educate yourself about SEP. Some people are dying from this that are on PD. Ask your doctor and renal center about this. There are many articles on the internet on Sclerosing Encapsulating Peritonitis written by doctors from all over the world.
Take Care.

Dear Family Member,

If your family member is using the brand of PD solution that youdescribed, then no wonder their getting SEP. Stop posting negativities of PD. HD has the same negativities as PD. There both not a cure but an extention of Life. PD compliance and technique efficient will minimize any risk of SEP.

Cut an paste from Helene on SEP:The information following was obtained from "The Textbook of Peritoneal Dialysis" Second Edition, edited by Ram Gokal, Ramesh Khanna, Raymond Krediet and Karl Nolph. In chapter 17, written by L. Fried and B. Piraino, it is stated that, "Sclerosing encapsulating peritonitis is an uncommon (1-2% of PD patients) but serious complication of PD". It can be seen even after transfer to hemodialysis and transplant.

Although SEP can have a high mortality rate when not detected and treated quickly many patients survive. It has also been reported to occur in patients that have never been on peritoneal dialysis or any other type of dialysis.

Recurrent episodes of peritonitis MAY be a predisposing factor, but this is not a consistant finding. It has been reported to occur as the first episode. The severity of the infecton makes a difference. That is why patients are taught to call as soon as they may suspect an epiosde. Treatment can be initiated quickly and the infection is mild.

Patients have been known to have 3 or more episodes of infection every year and never experience SEP.

Those of you considering peritoneal dialysis should be well informed of all the risks just as those that will choose hemodialysis. Both modalities are not without very serious risks. SEP, as stated above, is a uncommon complication.

I hope this helps with your questions and concerns.
