My doc wants me to take out my kidney's because he says that I need to dialyze with more fluid. I am now using 17.5 liters per day. I use a machine and do mostly at night. I don't want to use more fluid because I feel cramped.I don't want to take out my kidneys, because they still work a little and I like having them.Any Ideas? How much fluid do you use in a 24 hour period?

That is alot of fluid!! What is your KT/V? How do you feel? How are your labs? The old saying that more fluid is better is not always the case. Is your unit using any software to maximize your adequacies on PD? By that, do they have software to model your PD prescription? Have they done a peritoneal transport test (PET test). How much residual Renal function do you have? How much do you weigh?

T. My Kt/V is 1.66 and I weigh 178 Lbs or 80.9kg. Yes they have done a PET test and I think I am a high transporter. No,mylab, which is the world's largest full service dialysis previder, Fresenius, does not use software to create and or analyze PD prescriptions.

Bob, it sounds like to me that maybe your membrane is starting to fail. At 178 lbs, I wouldn't think you would be doing 17 liters for cycling. IF you where 225 lbs or more, I wouldn't hesitate on the 17 liters. Again, this is a guess on my part. Amedex study that just came out in the Journal, said that using more solution to increase urea and creatine is not always beneficial. Sorry I can't be more help for you....

If it where me, and a Dr wanted to take my kidney's out just to put more fluid in my belly, I would be looking for a new Dr. Call your local NKF or ask the Network that covers your area and ask who in your area has a very good reputation as a Nephrologist.

Review the Mexico Adequacy article on the Renal Web page home page on the right hand side, then take it to your Dr
