My mother-in-law (mentioned in another post) has been hospitalized with a peritonital staph infection (??) She has been on PD for a year-got really sick around Thanksgiving. At first they were just having her come in every seven days and putting antibiotics in her bag. She wasnt getting better so they have put her in the hospital. Neph is going to do Hemo for a while until infection clears. She is also diabetic and is having sugar issues..partly because she has been vomitting or not eating for who knows how long.
Should she be encouraged to stay with Hemo? How much different is nocturnal than the PD she has been doing daily? Would she get better medical monitoring with Hemo?

thanks for any input--I am still digging to find answers on this sight and several others.

Go to Kidneydirections.com, at the sight you can contact a RN for help.

Bfarina,

There are so many factors that determine which is best for the individual. I have known patients who have been on both and prefer hemo. I have been on both and PD is better for me. However, it sounds like your mother has other conditions that need to be monitored and may be contributing to her problems with PD. Listen to the nephrologist, express your concerns to him and ask his advise. Also, wait and see how your mother does on hemo. Good luck and keep us posted.
