I had a AV fistula created in my left upper arm several weeks ago. I still get swelling in the arm. I saw the surgeon recently and he didn't seem concerned about the swelling. I'm wondering exactly what causes the arm to swell and what will change to cause the swelling to eventually stop.

Are you keeping the arm up as much as possible?

Are you sleeping on the arm?

Are you a large weight gainer?

Remember this surgery was a trauma to your arm. Some swelling is anticipated. Are you presently on dialysis or is this a preparatory fistula for future dialysis.

If you are presently on dialysis have one nurse at the facility keep an eye on your arm. Measure it if you have to.

Is the swelling worse or better. Less or the same. More?

Is the fistula working? Did someone show you how to assess each day?
