I am a 43 year old, male who has IGA nephropathy. My doctor has informed me that it is time to start looking for a living donor. I am scheduled to see a surgeon next month regarding the implantation of my fistula. My majorconcern is how will this effect my active sports lifestyle? I play a lot of ice hockey and and golf, will I have to quit playing hockey?, as there is quite a risk of getting the fistula hit. And what if the fistula gets banged, what can be the reprecussions? Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

I would highly reccommend protecting your fistula. I have an a/v fistula. I'm 48 and an active surfer. Any small bump and I'm very aware of my "lifeline". I believe that exercice is great for circulation and the strength of the fistula. POSSIBLY, you may be able to find or construct a protective device if you continue hockey. Impact fiberglass, possibly incorporating telfon or carbon fiber, something bulletproof would do. For everyday protecting, look for a leather archery shooter's sheath. Don't stop living.
