I had a/v fistula created in upper dominant arm mid-January. They couldn't use a forearm because veins are extremely narrow. Procedure was complicated; it took over three hours. After procedure arm very painfull, huge scar running from right armpit to elbow and across. It's still uncomfortable at times, steals, and hand is always very cold. Do these syptoms lessen in time? How long does a fistula last? How long does it usually take to mature? Drs. say it looks good but don't give any further details. Thanks, any input greatly appreciated.

hello linda, my uncle had a a/v fisula placed and he had the same symptoms. The pain and swelling went away if a few weeks and he was able to use his fistula in about 4-5monts. he doesn't have any complaints now. His dr. said the fistula usally last longer than the grafts. good luck.
