My goretex graft has had numerous clotting problems over its lifetime. I usually go for several months with no trouble, and then will clot 2-3 times in rapid succession. Lately, it's been clotting 4 or 5 times in a series. Has anyone else had similar trouble? Does anyone have any idea what causes clotting, besides the obvious (lying on it, cutting off flow with clothing, eating foods with Vt. K, etc.)?
Has anyone ever heard that very hot/cold temp. can lead to clotting? The theory is that when the body is cold, the blood gets very thick and rushes to the center of the body, away from extremities.

My mom's gortex graft has lotted five (six?!) times in the last seven months, when she first had it put in. The doctors don't know why this is happening, but said they would not "roto-rooter" it any more. She has a perm-cath in and the docs are discussing a fistula. A side note is that a couple of weeks ago, she wouldn't stop bleeding (eight hours, plus a plasma infusion stopped that) and now, of course, she's clotted again. We go from one extreme to the other. I can tell you, clotting is more convenient because you can schedule the surgery! [QUOTE]Originally posted
Unfortunately that is the nature of the beast. Synthetic grafts clot. That is why DOQI is so strongly recommending that native AVF be placed when possible.
