My father(82 years old) has a catheter access near his neck on the left side. He refused to get an A/V access before he went on dialysis and now that he has been on dialysis almost 5 months he still is refusing to have it done. Is this limiting his future?
I don't think so as long as he is getting a good blood flow and a good treatment. We are in a nocturnal program and it started with all patients having catheters. My father is 78 and has been useing his catheter for about 16 months without problems.

Catheters generally do not allow the same clearances that an fistula or graft would. They (catheters) are also prone to clot and infection. Generally a catheter is seen as a temporary access until another access can be placed and mature (flow through it becomes adequate). The important thing is to check his blood work and adequency (Kt/V or URR), if this value is acceptable (1.2 or 68% or higher) then it would not appear to be compromising his treatments.
